Take One Action: Anthropocene: The Human Epoch (Additional Screening)

Fri 27 September 2019

Anthropocene

In their follow-up to Manufactured Landscapes and Watermark (TOAFF14), photographer Edward Burtynsky and his artistic collaborators Jennifer Baichwal and Nicholas de Pencier offer a cinematic meditation on the way human activity has reshaped the Earth.

Whether or not one adheres to the concept of the Anthropocene, which seeks to recognise the “human signature” on the Earth’s geology and has raised vigorous and passionate international debate, the sheer scale of our massive reengineering of the surface of our planet is brought to light in astonishing perspective in this stunning documentary.

Spanning numerous countries, Anthropocene lays bare the gashes, wounds and irreparable marks of industrialisation and extraction, revealing how our mania for conquest defines our relationship to the Earth — and how we have created a global epidemic.

(Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier, Edward Burtynsky, Canada | 2018 | 87 min | English / Russian / Italian / German / Mandarin / Cantonese with English subtitles).
Screening with: Hybrids (F. Brauch, M. Pujol, K. Tailhades, Y. Thireau, R. Thirion | France | 2017 | 6 min)
