TalkSee Photography Holding Everything Dear

‘On this earth there is no happiness without a sense of justice’ writes John Berger in Hold Everything Dear. An apparently simple sentence that touches on the essence of Berger’s perspective as an artist, writer, critic and TV presenter. Keeping Marxism tight to his analysis, Berger’s sense of justice crosses the closest and sensible observation of people, conflicts and temporalities. Born in Hackney, London in 1926, Berger had an internationally-recognised career while he lived most of his life in a remote small village in the south of France. Photography for him was never a subject to analyse, nor a practice to undertake but a way of understanding. His long lasting collaboration with photographer Jean More gives importance to his gentle, respectful methodology in making writing and photography travel hand by hand.

During the event we will focus on the crossover of two elements of Berger’s work: time and justice. These will be unraveled through his works such as: (but not limited to) The Seventh Man (conceived with photographer Jean Mohr 1975), About Time (a visual essay made for Channel 4 1985), and Another way of Telling (made 1982 with Jean Mohr). The discussion will parallel current topics of migration and terrorism as illustrated and commented in contemporary social networks, and mainstream news media. The speakers and chair of the event will be announced at a later date on the TSP Facebook page and here. The event is a collaboration with Dr Valentina Bonizzi (based in Tirana) and TSP.

This event is wheelchair accessible, and ability to use hearing aid technology provided advance notice is given.
