Roger Fenton Valley of Death On 7ihr
TalkSeePhotography’s Incubator events are a public platform where emerging writers and makers of photography can present their ideas alongside a nominated speaker within their chosen field. Following an open call for applications throughout the summer we are pleased to present the first in our 2017 series of Incubator events with a presentation by Rowan Markson.
Rowan Markson is an artist and curator based in Glasgow. He studied Photographic Arts at the University of Westminster. His research led practice brings together fragmented histories by extracting form and action, which can reveal the cyclical nature of history, to examine how disparate narratives can form an alternative and collective archive.
Markson will discuss his ongoing ‘Crimea Revisited’ project, due to be completed in April 2018. For this project Markson intended to revisit the site of two Roger Fenton photographs, made during the Crimean War between 1853 - 56. However when his funding decision was reversed by the British Council on security grounds following Russian annexation in 2014 Markson’s research revealed the fact that the Crimean War of the 1850s signalled the start of the ‘War of Information’.
This event is scheduled to coincide with the ‘Roger Fenton - Shadows of War’ exhibition at the Queens Gallery, Royal Collections in Edinburgh. 4th August - 26th November, 2017.
