James Pfaff: TalkSeePhotography

For the 2016 September event, which marks the first in TSPs 4th consecutive year, we are delighted to present artist James Pfaff who recently relocated in Glasgow after 20 years in Hamburg and London. Pfaff's practice is centred around reconstruction and documentation of his own life, and this evening he will speak about the work that led up to his newly published book Alex and Me.

Alex and Me was recently released by the Italian contemporary art and architecture publisher Danilo Montanari/ Ravenna. The subtly coloured and black and white images images in the book, which has been in the making nearly 20 years, unfolds a fragmented narrative that creates a sense of intimate confession and general overview of a lifestyle, making it both timeless and immediate. With most of the work shot at the end of the 1990s, the 20 years the book has had in production have also lent it something of an organic quality.

Alex and Me was mentioned by Erik Kessler as one of his favourite 10 books at Arles 2016. Alongside artistic photography, Pfaff has also had a career as an editorial and advertising photographer and his clients include Elle, The Face, The Wire, Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair.
