May's event is a panel discussion featuring Aileen Campbell (CGC), Gillian Gilbert (FA photographer), Nina Bacos (TSP). It takes a point of departure in 6 Foot Gallery's exhibition A Glass Expanse, which features 10 emerging female photographers responding to a self portraiture brief.
The panel aim to open discussions around the paradigms for female practitioners, the roles gender performs in the making of work and in the placement of the artist within the professional landscape. Looking at the difference between gendered or feminist work we will discuss from different positions if gender plays a deterministic role within the making of work.
Is a new understanding required of how women are organising themselves? What role can or does feminism play in this context? Have the priorities indeed changed and if so what concerns are filtering through from women's lives into their work and what impact is this having on women’s language and what they are communicating?
The event is guest curated by artist/curator Alice Gordon and John McDougall (6 Foot Gallery).
