Transmission Gallery & Katherine MacBride Polyvocal Subjects Discussion & Screening

Sun 22 June 2014

Katherine MacBride

A screening and discussion event organised by Glasgow-based artist Katherine MacBride in collaboration with Transmission Gallery. The artist has invited Amy Charlesworth (Art Historian and Curator, University of Leeds and Bradford University), Sophia Lycouris (Director of Graduate Research Centre, ECA) and Lyndsay Mann (Artist and PhD researcher, ECA) to talk alongside film and video works by Ursula Biemann, Manon de Boer and Emily Vey Duke/Cooper Battersby.

The discussion will be focused on different forms of embodied female voices on screen in a range of artists' moving images. The works chosen address themes around: the feminisation of certain labour forms in globalised markets, the impact of this on existing social structures, the role of class in representations of female voices, the role of language and political action in identity formation, the fragmentation of language in response to trauma, the actions of female artists when representing or self-representing female subjects, the intersections between private or domestic interactions and publicly visible art works resulting from collaborative practices, and the instability of langauge forms.

The three speakers share a diversity of practices and research interests which together cover the documentary turn and essayistic approaches to video, gender and capital as represented and documented through art practices, dance, interdisciplinary choreographies and research methodologies, and the place of voice and address in contemporary art. As a group their activities include art practice, curation, choreography, teaching, research, facilitation and writing. It is intended that this event be informal and inclusive with an emphasis on facilitating discussion amongst all participants attending.
