A person with pale muddy hands sows mustard seeds into small pots filled with mixed compost.

Sowing mustard seeds

Wondering when to germinate, what growing medium to use or whether to sow under cover?

Join Charley McKenzie, educational gardener, to learn the ins and outs of sowing seeds in a friendly workshop at Bellahouston Demonstration Gardens.

We will learn practical skills in sowing seeds into module trays and discuss how to bring different seeds out of dormancy and create ideal germination conditions.

This workshop is perfect for anyone starting to grow from seed, needing a refresher, or keen to learn different techniques for sowing.

About the contributors

Charley McKenzie found a love of plants after travelling, working on farms and self-taught foraging. She studied Horticulture at SRUC in Glasgow Botanic Gardens and has since married her two loves – plants and people – by becoming an educational gardener! It brings her joy to share the wonders of growing our own food and finding it all around us, in the parks and in the weeds we pull out to make space for our veg. Working for the charity SACRO, Charley spends her time learning and sharing that knowledge with other people.

Glasgow Seed School is a slow season of free workshops, talks and events. It aims to nurture seed stewardship and help growers build climate, food and community resilience. It is organised by Glasgow Seed Library, in collaboration with friends and partner organisations across the city.

Access

This event is free but ticketed. Places are strictly limited to maintain social distancing. Please only book if you intend to attend the workshop.

There is space for one or two vehicles to park in the garden for anyone who needs to come via car and have it nearby. Otherwise, park at the House for an Art Lover car park. The site is on a steep slope, but all paths are tarmac so can be accessed by the wheelchair or buggy. There are toilets and a disabled toilet.

If you would like further details, or have other access requests, please email glasgowseedlibrary@cca-glasgow.com.
