NEW VENUE Take One Action Film Festival Silvana

Tue 18 September 2018

Silvana

Please note, this event has moved to Scottish Youth Theatre, 105 Brunswick Street, Glasgow G1 1TF.

Following the fire at Glasgow School of Art and the O2 ABC music venue, the Centre for Contemporary Arts remains within the cordoned area in Garnethill. At this time, we expect to remain closed until Monday 15 October.

We are working with our programme partners who had scheduled events throughout this period. Details of new venues and cancellations are here.

(Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring, Christina Tsiobanelis, Sweden, 2017, 91 mins, Swedish, Lithuanian, English with English subtitles)

"Let’s smash the patriarchy!" Swedish hip-hop artist Silvana Imam shouts through a megaphone, and hundreds of hands shoot into the air.

Silvana’s uncompromising punk rap lyrics explore feminism, antiracism, LGBT rights and her own immigrant background (her father is from Syria, her mother from Lithuania). Challenging bodyshaming, racial and gender stereotypes propagated by religious institutions and the media alike, her performances ruffle a fair few feathers.

This intimate portrait of a radically intersectional and talented voice scratches at the polished surface of Sweden’s benevolent, progressive tolerance to reveal the many prejudices bubbling beneath – and celebrates a trailblazer who empowers thousands of young girls to seek a different understanding of their own strength.

BEYOND THE SCREEN:
Join us after the screening for a unique, specially-curated programme of spoken word and musical performances by Scotland-based artists whose work explores women’s empowerment, marginalised experiences and notions of belonging – including hip hop artist Erin Friel, musician Heir of the Cursed and poets Tawona Sithole, Katie Ailes and Leyla Josephine.

Presented in association with Moving Docs, The Skinny and SPEAK!
